Hackney Young Peoples University is a registered charity (1112528) and offers a range of free holiday programmes that are open to 11-25 year olds.  Young people attending the project have the opportunity to improve their skills, try out new subjects and explore activities, which can help them in their career choices as well as improve their confidence and enable them to access some of the high-quality facilities in Hackney.

The summer uni programme (which is one of our largest projects) began in 1997 as a London Borough of Hackney Initiative placed at Hackney Community College.  The Programme was quite small with around 30 courses / activities, but was well received.

For our 2008 programme we offered 84 activities, had 2,216 enrolments, 1,568 attendances and 1,314 certificates were awarded.   For the programme, the key success criteria of the project are the number of students attending and the number of certificates they achieve (which represent the number of courses they complete).

It is clear from our evaluation process that students welcome and enjoy our summer programme and look forward to taking part each year.   The main reasons for attending the summer programme is to learn, try new activities make new friends and to increase their level of confidence.

Activities range from Music Production and Dance to Fashion Design and Hair Dressing, which are covered in our 4 core subject areas

  • Arts and Media
  • Vocational and Academic
  • Essential Life Skills
  • Sports Leisure and Recreation

    Developing our activities

The project goals for the next year are as follows; To maintain the attendance on the summer Uni programme; To launch a successful and popular half – term programme and Easter programme for 11-16 year olds.
